ASRI Promotes Sustainable Environmental Action through Composting and Tree Planting Workshops in Karihkil Village

Bogor, August 9, 2026 – The ASRI (Environmentally Aware Action) activity was held at the Bambu Kuning Rapih Environmentally Friendly Village in Karihkil Village, Ciseeng District, Bogor Regency. This activity was initiated by the Student Community Service Program (KKM) Group 7 of the Ummul Quro’ Al-Islami Bogor Institute as part of a series of Student Work Lecture (Kuliah Kerja Mahasiswa) programs, in collaboration with the Jiva Catalyst Foundation and the ID Humanity Dompet Dhuafa Foundation to encourage more sustainable environmental management practices at the community level.
The series of activities began with an opening session and remarks from the parties involved. This momentum provided a space to emphasize that environmental programs do not stop at ceremonial activities, but rather need to be built as collaborative processes that can be continued, maintained, and developed by the community after the KKM period ends.
The head of KKM Group 7, Khalif Pandan Wangi, explained that his group has 12 work programs, several of which have been implemented with residents. He mentioned that around three to four programs are designed as sustainable programs. The enthusiasm of the residents has also resulted in a product named SAMPEURIANG, as a form of community involvement in the program being implemented.
“We have 12 programs, and some are already implemented. Three to four of them are sustainable. Some of the programs have been very enthusiastically participated by residents and even resulted in a product called SAMPEURIANG. Administratively, we may only have a 30-day KKM, but we still need synergy to build and monitor existing programs so that this village can develop into a model village,” said Khalif Pandan Wangi, Head of KKM Group 7.
The KKM Field Supervisor, Rahmat Setiabudi, S.M., M.M., also expressed his hope that the students’ presence in the community would not only provide benefits during the activities but also leave a lasting impact.
“Hopefully, the presence of these KKM students will provide benefits for the surrounding community, both in this world and the hereafter,” said Rahmat Setiabudi, S.M., M.M.
Local community support is also a crucial part of ASRI’s implementation. Abdul Ghofar, Head of Neighborhood Association (RT) 04/RW 03, assessed that the students’ presence has helped realize an idea he has long wanted to develop in the neighborhood. According to him, collaboration means that communities no longer have to work alone in pioneering environmental programs.
“Praise The Lord, these students have been very helpful. The program they’re working on is a manifestation of something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m truly grateful that with the presence of our fellow students, we’re finally not going it alone. I hope this program will be sustainable even after the KKM (Community Based Learning) has ended” said Abdul Ghofar, Head of Neighborhood Association (RT) 04/RW 03.
After the opening ceremony, the event continued with a composting workshop facilitated by ID Humanity Dompet Dhuafa Foundation. This workshop aimed to introduce organic waste management through simple practices that people can implement at home. The material is expected to help reduce the waste burden and foster more responsible waste management habits.
Ray Rahayu Saputro of ID Humanity Dompet Dhuafa emphasized that the issue of waste is directly linked to environmental resilience and disaster risk. Therefore, managing waste from its source is an important step that the community can take together.
“Hopefully, this collaboration can help mitigate disasters, including by addressing the impact of waste on the environment” said Ray Rahayu Saputro, Partnership of ID Humanity Dompet Dhuafa.
The ASRI series then continued with a tree planting event with the Jiva Catalyst Foundation in the Bambu Kuning Rapih Eco-Friendly Village area. The planting served as both a symbol and a concrete step to raise awareness about the importance of green spaces, environmental restoration, and community involvement in caring for their homes.
Bunga El-Najma Sofiana, a campaigner for the Jiva Catalyst Foundation, stated that the sustainability of environmental programs ideally goes hand in hand with strengthening economic benefits for the community. Thus, environmental action can develop into a movement that not only preserves the ecosystem but also opens up opportunities for empowerment at the village level.
“We hope this program can remain sustainable, both environmentally and economically, thereby helping to boost the economy of Karihkil Village. Hopefully, our action today can have a long-lasting impact” said Bunga El-Najma Sofiana.
A message of sustainability was also delivered by Mr. Amung, a representative of the Social Service’s P3K and a community leader. He emphasized that the main challenge of a social activity is not just generating an idea or starting a program, but ensuring its continued maintenance after the momentum of the activity ends.
“Creating a program is easy, but maintaining it is difficult” said Mr. Amung.
Through ASRI, Student Activity Unit (KKM) Group 7 of the Ummul Quro’ Al-Islami Institute in Bogor, along with the Karihkil Village community, the Jiva Catalyst Foundation, and the ID Humanity Dompet Dhuafa Foundation, are working to build a collaborative model that combines education, environmental action, and community participation. Composting and tree-planting workshops serve as a gateway to developing habits that can be continued independently at the household and neighborhood levels.
This activity also emphasizes the importance of post-KKM monitoring. With synergy between students, community leaders, residents, social institutions, and environmental organizations, it is hoped that the programs initiated will not remain short-term but will develop into consistent practices that can be replicated as examples for other regions.
