From Land to Ocean: Jiva Catalyst Foundation Empowers Youth and Communities for a Sustainable Future

Jakarta, Indonesia — 6 June 2026  In commemoration of World Environment Day and World Ocean Day 2026, Jiva Catalyst Foundation successfully organized “From Land to Ocean”, a youth-centered environmental initiative aimed at raising awareness about the connection between land-based activities and ocean health while encouraging collective action for a more sustainable future.

Held at Carnival Beach, Ancol, Jakarta, the event brought together 60 participants, including selected attendees, volunteers, committee members, and invited guests, in a collaborative effort to learn, engage, and contribute to environmental conservation.

Indonesia is home to one of the world’s richest marine ecosystems. However, environmental challenges such as plastic pollution, waste leakage, and unsustainable consumption patterns continue to threaten both terrestrial and marine environments. Since much of the waste entering rivers and oceans originates from activities on land, environmental stewardship requires collective responsibility and action.

With the theme “For the Planet, For the Future,” the program was designed to help participants understand the interconnected relationship between land and ocean ecosystems while empowering them to become active contributors to environmental solutions within their communities.

The event combined educational sessions with hands-on activities, providing participants with practical experiences in environmental conservation and sustainable living.

Key activities included:

  • Mini Talk: From Land to Ocean – exploring the impact of human behavior, waste management practices, and consumption patterns on marine ecosystem health.
  • Beach Cleanup Challenge – encouraging direct action to reduce coastal waste and promote cleaner shorelines.
  • Sea in a Bottle Workshop – an interactive creative activity designed to reinforce environmental awareness through art and storytelling.
  • Beachside Community Feast (Liwetan) – fostering meaningful conversations, cultural connection, and community engagement in an informal setting.
  • Games and Networking Activities – creating opportunities for participants to connect, collaborate, and build relationships with fellow sustainability advocates and changemakers.

Through these activities, participants gained valuable knowledge, strengthened their environmental awareness, and experienced firsthand how collective action can contribute to meaningful environmental impact.

Leveraging Digital Advocacy As part of the initiative, Jiva Catalyst Foundation also launched the Sustainability Content Challenge 2026, inviting young people to amplify environmental messages through Instagram Reels. Participants created digital content addressing topics such as waste reduction, recycling, ocean conservation, and sustainable lifestyles. By utilizing social media as a platform for advocacy, the challenge encouraged wider public engagement and demonstrated how digital storytelling can inspire positive behavioral change and environmental action.

Although held in Jakarta, the environmental issues highlighted during the event reflect challenges faced throughout Southeast Asia. Marine pollution, plastic waste, and ecosystem degradation continue to affect coastal communities across the ASEAN region, underscoring the need for collaborative, community-driven solutions. The initiative reinforced a simple yet powerful message: protecting our oceans begins with responsible actions on land. Every effort whether reducing waste, participating in community cleanups, adopting sustainable habits, or educating others contributes to healthier ecosystems and more resilient communities. More than a one-day event, From Land to Ocean served as a platform for empowering young people to become environmental leaders and active contributors to sustainable development. By integrating education, environmental action, creativity, and community engagement, Jiva Catalyst Foundation continues to create opportunities for individuals and communities to learn, connect, and drive positive change. The event demonstrated that meaningful impact is possible when people come together with a shared commitment to protecting both people and the planet.
